On June 19, families and their children assembled at the library to build their own fairy houses.
More than 20 stunning and distinctive fairy houses were created, and the program was so successful that we intend to offer it again in the Spring of 2025!
Let's clarify what a fairy house is. Essentially, a fairy house is a whimsical structure made from natural materials, designed to be inviting to fairies and stimulate the imaginations of children. They can range from simple to intricate designs.
The beauty of a fairy house lies in its organic materials. You might find twigs, leaves, stones, and even shells used to create unique designs that fit seamlessly into the environment. The aim is to craft a delightful little home that resonates with nature's charm.
Building a fairy house presents a fantastic opportunity for artistic expression and a way to reconnect with nature.
Materials Used:
Cedar shingles (thank you to Danny Boutot for the donation of cedar shingles and to Mark Beever for cutting them to the correct size for the project!)
Twigs and branches: These act as the framework of any fairy house. Choose twigs of varying lengths to create a sturdy structure. For example, using twigs from an old apple tree can add a lovely touch.
Leaves and flowers: Use these for decoration to add vibrant colors. Dried leaves can withstand the elements better than fresh ones, so consider collecting some from the ground.
Pebbles and stones: These create a solid foundation or pathways around your fairy house. Research shows that landscaping with stones can improve drainage, which is beneficial if you use your fairy house for plants as well.
Bark and moss: These are excellent for covering walls or the ground area surrounding the house. Moss can represent a lovely lawn and add texture.
Natural embellishments: Include items like acorns, pinecones, or seashells. For example, a small pinecone can serve as a quirky chimney. (Thank you to Vayle Craig for the donation of sea glass!)
The goal is to use what nature provides. This approach is not only eco-friendly but also ensures a beautiful, natural aesthetic.
